Managing payroll can be a complex and time-consuming process. It’s essential to get it right, but it’s not always easy. My consultancy combines experience in payroll management, tool development, and process improvement. This enables me to provide companies with the expertise they need to streamline their payroll processes and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Manage Processing (Global) Payrolls

This experience gave me the ability to demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and a deep understanding of payroll regulations in multiple countries. I have worked with a variety of payroll systems, data sources, and stakeholders, including HR departments, finance teams, and local payroll providers. In the roles I had, I have collected, cleaned, and aggregated payroll data from multiple sources, reconciled payroll information, and prepared and submitted payroll taxes and payments in accordance with local regulations.

My roles required close collaboration with local payroll providers, HR departments, and finance teams to ensure the smooth implementation of multi-country payrolls. I have set up payrolls for multiple countries and integrated payroll systems with existing HR and financial systems, and ensured that employees are paid accurately and on time.

In these roles I have overseen and coordinated the activities of a group of individuals responsible for the efficient and effective processing of payrolls, working closely with payroll specialists, HR departments, finance teams, and other stakeholders to ensure that payroll information is accurate and up-to-date, and that payroll processes are running smoothly and efficiently.

In my roles, I have managed conflicting priorities and navigated complex payroll regulations in multiple countries, communicating effectively, making decisions, and motivating my team to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality results.


Select, onboard and manage global vendors

I have conducted evaluations of potential vendors, selected a vendor that meets the organization’s specific requirements, and negotiated and finalized vendor contracts. I have also managed the onboarding process, which involves setting up and testing the vendor’s payroll systems, integrating these systems with existing HR and financial systems, and ensuring that employees are paid accurately and on time.

In managing global payroll vendors, I have maintained ongoing communication and collaboration, regularly monitoring vendor performance and reconciling payroll data. My role has required strong project management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. 


Advice, inform and guide (Crossborder Executives and Expats

In my roles I have had to deal with guiding complex HR and payroll topics for C-level expats and crossborder commuters. I have demonstrated a deep understanding of HR and payroll regulations and communication and interpersonal skills. This required tailoring my explanations to the executive’s level of understanding and using clear and concise language to ensure that they have a full understanding of the topic. I have also provided guidance and support to executives on topics such as compensation and benefits, tax planning, social security, global mobility and compliance with local payroll regulations.

Through my work, I have honed my critical thinking skills and ability to navigate complex payroll and HR regulations in multiple countries. Despite its challenges, guiding complex HR and payroll topics for C-level expats is a critical function that helps organizations ensure that their executives are informed and prepared to make informed decisions..


Set-up large BackOffice teams in Offshore locations

As an expatriate, I have been tasked with the responsibility of establishing and leading a team of subject matter experts in India. This role has required me to manage a series of projects aimed at relocating work from onshore to offshore locations, while also overseeing stakeholder management, training, and implementation of offshore tasks. Furthermore, I have been tasked with maintaining transparent insight into progress quality and turnaround times.

Payroll Audits

In my previous roles I have experience in performing payroll audits. This critical function required a deep understanding of payroll regulations, tax laws, and accounting principles. This invoved reviewing payroll records, comparing payroll data to financial records, and verifying that employees have been paid accurately and in compliance with local regulations and that tax and social security liabilities were correctly calculated and remitted to the relevant authorities.

Through my experience in performing payroll audits, I helped my previous organization ensure compliance with local regulations, maintain the accuracy of payroll data, and prevent financial loss.


Implementing Payroll Software

In my professional career, I have successfully implemented ADP & Nmbrs payroll software for a range of clients in the Dutch market. This involved streamlining the payroll process and ensuring efficient data collection for these clients.

Moreover, I have gained extensive experience in implementing payroll software for global clients. Through my expertise, I have enabled organizations to integrate and streamline their payroll systems across various geographies. My experience has equipped me with the ability to work with diverse teams and navigate complex technical requirements to ensure successful implementation of payroll software.


Finance management

As a (co)-business owner, I have successfully implemented a new invoicing and project hour bookkeeping system for my company. This involved designing template projects, hour codes, pricing tables, and GL-accounts to ensure accurate and efficient financial tracking. Additionally, I have managed various financial aspects of the business, including monthly invoicing, budget monitoring, and cash flow management. With a wealth of experience in the (Global) payroll industry, I have developed a unique skill set in utilizing Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to create tools that drive efficiency and improve quality. This gave me a deep understanding of the capabilities of Excel, and have been able to leverage this knowledge to create tools that have provided significant time savings and improved outcomes for payroll teams. This leading to sustainable improvements and quick wins in areas that were previously time-consuming. The ability to unlock the full potential of Excel in the global payroll space has given me a valuable asset to any organization seeking to streamline their operations and drive process improvement.

Complex calculation tools
Throughout my career, I have developed a vast range of calculation tools to support clients with complex financial requirements. Some examples of these tools include:

  • Automations for the Dutch Cost Labor Scheme (WKR) for local clients.
  • Complex shadow and split payroll calculations, including gross to net calculations for various countries.
  • Net guarantee gross-ups for expats with cross-country social security and tax liabilities.
  • Personal income tax and social security implications for individuals relocating to other countries.
  • Complete year calculations of employer payroll costs and gross-to-net overviews.
  • Hour registration tools for retail stores to support payroll administration.
  • Net implications for DGA’s (directors/main shareholders) in the Netherlands.
  • Global shares and equity liabilities for large clients.

Complex Global Payroll Calendars

One of the largest applications I have built was for a multinational corporation with over 15,000 employees located across 100+ countries. As the majority of the payroll operations were based in Amsterdam, there was a need to automatically calculate and generate a yearly calendar that could accommodate the following variables:

  • Multiple payroll process steps with two separate installments
  • A proximate payment day (e.g., the 25th of each month) that was automatically adjusted based on weekends or public holidays in each country
  • The ability to choose the payment frequency
  • A T-[day] system that calculates backwards from the established payment day
  • Incorporation of public holidays from all countries and regions as required
  • The ability to choose the type of weekend or start of the week on a country level
  • The ability to select the location where each process step takes place, allowing public holidays for each specific country to be incorporated into that step
  • The ability to create additional pay-runs per country

The output of this application included a complete overview of all countries and pay frequencies, containing a date for each process step. The file was automated to require only a yearly update of the public holidays, making it highly efficient. Additionally, the application included a visually appealing calendar on a country/region level that incorporated all of the relevant variables for that particular country. Through my expertise in financial calculations and software development, I was able to design and implement a highly customized and effective solution for this multinational corporation.

Payroll Control & Reconciliation tools

I have created and maintained a customized payroll control application in Excel for several companies that includes a wide range of features. Some of the key features are:

  • Uploading employee master data from a variety of sources, including HR software
  • Uploading payroll input files or manually including payroll input, which can be separated into multiple sheets as input categories
  • Supporting dozens of country-specific requirements and calculations that are maintained in a database
  • Automatic tracking that visualizes the imported and manually added data
  • Various tracking options that can be exported at the end of the month for dashboard purposes
  • Importing a gross-to-net file from the payroll provider
  • Reconciling all data in a summarized overview with previous month’s data and connecting it with Gross2net
  • Using macros to convert data into a format required by the payroll provider

These are just a few examples of the many features included in my payroll control application. Through my expertise in payroll and tool development, I have been able to create highly customized solutions for each client that streamline their payroll processes and increase efficiency.

Flux calculations and controls using Power Queries

As part of my work on payroll projects, I have often utilized a powerful Excel feature called Power Query to connect and clean large amounts of data from different sources into a single output file. This involved extracting data from various files, and transforming it into a format that was suitable for payroll processing.

One of the key benefits of using Power Query was the ability to perform checks on critical calculations and data, as well as identify any fluctuations or deviations between the current and previous months’ data. By incorporating these controls into the output file, I was able to help ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the payroll data.

To present this information in a user-friendly way, I created summarized reports and dashboards that provided key insights into the payroll data. These reports were tailored to the specific needs of each client and provided a clear overview of the payroll process, highlighting any potential issues or opportunities for improvement. Overall, my use of Power Query helped to streamline the payroll process and improve data accuracy, ultimately leading to more efficient and effective payroll operations.

Reporting & Dashboards

As a data visualization enthousiast, I possess a passion for creating visually stunning reports and dashboards that effectively communicate important information to stakeholders. One of my key strengths is my ability to automate these reports and dashboards, ensuring that they are automatically populated on a monthly basis with the required data sources. Intercompany Crosscharging invoices

In my professional career, I have gained extensive experience in cross-border cost allocation for companies with a presence in multiple countries. I have worked with clients who have employees stationed all over the world, or who are seconded to other countries, and have helped them allocate the cost of these cross-border working arrangements to the relevant country.

To accomplish this, I assisted companies in setting up a template to gather all relevant costs and transform them into an easy-to-understand invoice that could be cross-charged. 


Forms and databases

Throughout my career, I have developed many smart forms and connecting databases in Excel. My primary goal has been to improve the quality of information gathered and reduce errors, while also streamlining the data collection process for various projects.

I have created numerous smart forms that include features such as dropdown menus, checkboxes, and automatic calculations, allowing for easier and more accurate data entry. Additionally, I have connected these forms to databases, which has allowed for the automatic import of data into relevant systems.

Furthermore, I have also been able to transform these smart forms into other formats, such as CSV or PDF, depending on the needs of the project. This flexibility has allowed me to work with a variety of stakeholders, each with unique data requirements.
